Dune Buggy is the second episode of season one of Drake & Josh and the second episode of the series overall.

Plot[]

Drake and Josh receive an old dune buggy from a friend but are forbidden to use it. When Drake defies his parents and injures himself after crashing the buggy, he tries to hide his injuries, but gets no support from a grounded Josh.

Synopsis[]

In the opening comments, Josh complains about how Drake always gets away with everything while Drake eats cake with his hands, drinks milk straight from the carton, and wipes his hands on the curtains.

Drake and Josh are excited to receive a dune buggy from Drake's friend Trevor, only to find it is broken down. Later, Drake convinces Josh to try out lying after Josh accidentally breaks the TV, but Josh is grounded for doing so. Drake and Josh then fully repair the dune buggy, to the surprise of their parents, who forbid them from driving it, as they feel it is too dangerous for them. Drake secretly drives it with Trevor anyway and crashes, injuring himself in the process. Drake then tries to conceal his injuries and the damages to the dune buggy. However, Josh soon finds out when he gets a call from the emergency room and confronts Drake about it, angry that all Drake cares about is keeping the accident and his injuries a secret from their parents.

Racked with guilt, Drake confesses to Walter and Audrey, even revealing he destroyed the TV and talked Josh into lying about it and they ground Drake for two weeks, much to Josh's delight. However, due to Drake's injury, his "grounding" is simply staying home from school, resting, and making Josh be his servant. Josh is dismayed that despite everything, Drake still has it easy.

During the end credits, Drake goes to the kitchen when he comes home with the groceries. After he drops the groceries off, he ends up falling down to the floor due to his injuries from the dune buggy accident.

Trivia[]

  • When Drake tries to get Josh to help him fix the dune buggy, Josh is listening to the "Tony Pajamas" sketch from The Amanda Show, which Drake Bell and Josh Peck starred in together.
  • Drake's mom can be heard in the opening sequence.
  • This is the first time Drake and Josh are sent upstairs by being grounded.
    • Also, up until the near end of this episode, it is revealed that Drake has never been grounded/punished in his entire life.
  • This is the only physical appearance of Trevor, though he is mentioned in multiple other episodes probably because of him getting brain scans.
  • This episode reveals that Trevor gets brain scans every month. Josh mentioned that Drake should get a brain scan like his unintelligent friend.
  • A deleted scene from the episode featured Trevor carrying Drake into the hospital following the accident. A woman at the counter says to Trevor, "Car accident?", and Trevor replies "No thanks, we just had one." This scene is available on the "Suddenly Brothers: Volume 1" DVD as part of the bonus features.
  • The events of this episode were never mentioned in Steered Straight. This may just be because Drake doesn't want his parents or Trevor's parents to explain this to policemen about what he and Trevor had done.
  • This is the first time that Josh's ear hurts after he and Drake find the horn on behalf of putting the wires together while they both repair the dune buggy.
  • The episode featured 3 Nickelodeon light bulb hums, where it usually has 6.
  • This episode reveals that Josh is prone to bad luck.
  • This is the first time Josh gets on the same page as Megan.
  • Josh mentions the dune buggy in the episode Helen's Surgery.
  • This is the first episode that Megan doesn't prank Drake and Josh.
  • Later releases of this episode has Good Charlotte's "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous" removed and dubbed over with a different rock song.
  • Shanee Edwards is credited as "co-starring"; she most likely played the ER receptionist in the deleted scene.
  • Christopher Michael, who played the doctor in this episode, would go on to play Officer Carl in another Dan Schneider show iCarly several years later. He also guest starred as Chief Michaels on "7th Heaven" as seen from the episode, "Saturday".
  • As of June 2021, this episode and Pilot no longer airs on TeenNick.
  • This episode along with Pilot, Guitar, Blues Brothers, Driver's License, Number 1 Fan and The Gary Grill are not available on any streaming services due to licensing issues with material used in the episode. It is available on Paramount+.
  • Moral: Breaking a promise and then lying about it can get you into trouble.

Goofs[]

  • After Drake and Trevor flip in the dune buggy, Drake has a lot of scratches, bruises, and can't walk well. If Trevor was in the dune buggy with him, wouldn't he have gotten hurt too? However, it is likely that Trevor jumped out of the dune buggy right before Drake makes contact with the tree, Trevor's side was unharmed and Drake's side got more damaged than Trevor's, or Trevor braced himself before hitting the tree and therefore got unharmed.
  • After Josh falls out of the buggy, there is a shot of him lying on the floor in which the crashmat he landed on is visible under the buggy.
  • Drake and Josh should not have been able to drive the dune buggy anyway as neither of them have their driver's license, although they're parents did allow them to take it to the lake house that summer.
  • Because Drake is a minor, the doctor realistically should've have called Drake's parents first to inform them that he was at the hospital.
  • Drake says he'd put make up all over his cuts but when he gets home and covers up the dune buggy before Josh enters the garage, you can clearly see that Drake doesn't really have make up on him, it looks like that he's got his real skin, and his cuts are gone away.
  • How did Audrey and Walter not notice that it was Trevor who brought the dune buggy?
    • It's likely that Drake and Josh told them.
  • Before Drake drives the dune buggy out of the garage, neither him nor Trevor hit the garage door opener on the side of the wall. It seems highly unlikely the door was already open to begin with since Trevor came in through the side door.
